The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure,

making wise the simple; (Psalms 19:7 NKJV)

All Scripture Is God Breathed

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16,17 NKJV)

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;

and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

(2 Timothy 4:3,4 NKJV)

"For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:10,11 NKJV)

Growth Food for New Believers

But the word of the LORD endures forever." Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.  Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. (1 Peter 1:25-2:3 NKJV)

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17 NKJV)

The Bible Is About Jesus

You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. (John 5:39 NKJV)

. . . but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. (John 20:31 NKJV)

The Cleansing Power of the Word

You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. (John 15:3)

Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. (John 17:17 NKJV)

. . . that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. (Ephesians 5:26,27 NKJV)

Counsel From the Word - He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. (Psalms 107:20 NKJV)

Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You! (Psalms 119:11)

Your testimonies also are my delight and my counselors. (Psalms 119:24)

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalms 119:105)

The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.(Psalms 119:130)

Jesus Used Scriptures When He Was Tempted. (Matthew 4:1-11)

Devotional Bible Reading

Plan quite time without distractions - (25-30 minutes)

Pray for Holy Spirit to be your teacher

Read whole book, in order, a chapter or several verses at a time

Consider what was read to find:

Sins to forsake?

Promises to claim?

Examples to follow?

Warnings to consider?

Teachings about God?

Other important truths?

Applications to my life?

Anything you don’t understand?

Keep a notebook to record insights and answers

How to Study the Bible - Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV)

Let scripture interpret scripture

Examples:         Isaiah 28:16 the precious cornerstone - 1 Peter 2:4-8

Revelation 12:1 the woman and child -  Genesis 37:9,10

                                    Revelation 12:3 the dragon - Revelation 12:9

Inductive Bible Study Method

Observe - who, where, what happened, when, context, and main theme?

Interpret – what does the passage mean? what is being said about God,

about His love, about us, etc.?

Application - what do we need to do, believe, obey, change, ask God for?

Exercise in observation:  Read the following passage and write your answers to the questions.

(Luke 4:38,39 NKJV)

38) Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon's house.

But Simon's wife's mother was sick with a high fever, and they made request of Him concerning her. 39) So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them.

EXAMPLE OF CHARTING

Luke 4:38,39

OBSERVATION

INTERPRETATION

APPLICATION

38) He arose from

the synagogue

Jesus was seated, teaching or in a place of  authority in the temple because the common people stood around the teacher

Remember that we will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ and give an account for ourselves (Rom. 14:10-12)

Entered Simon’s house

Jesus took time to give personal attention to his disciples' needs; even the needs of their families.

Jesus cares about our personal life; our home, our work, and our recreation.

Ask Jesus to come into every area.

Simon’s wife’s mother

Peter was married. Peter’s mother-in-law may have lived with them if she stayed there for care.  (We know that Jesus called Peter to become one of the leading disciples and a leader in the early church.)

God knows the responsibilities that we have in this world, yet He may have glorious plans for us to serve Him.  Don’t limit what God can do in, and with  your life. Also, there’s nothing less spiritual about being married.

Sick with a high fever

she was probably very weak and  confused since the fever was high

Remember Jesus is looking out for us even when we are weak and confused.

They made request of Him concerning her.

they petitioned the Lord for Peter’s mother-in-law

We need to make petitions in prayer for those who are in need and for the helpless.

39) He stood over her

Jesus took a commanding position.

Remember Jesus reigns on high!  Jesus is the good shepherd, watching over his sheep.

Rebuked the fever

Jesus spoke directly against the sickness, not to the mother-in-law. (On some other occasions He addressed the sin of the sick person.)

Don’t accuse a sick person of having gross sin in their life. Troubles have come upon everyone’s life because of Adam’s sin.  But sometimes personal sin is involved.

it left her

The fever obeyed Jesus.

(Mark 4:41 . . . "Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!")

Remember Jesus is Lord of all.  We are to call upon His name with the authority that Jesus gave to believers

(Mark 16:17,18)

Immediately she arose

She was instantly given strength and she became active.

Remember (Phil. 4:13  I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.)

And served them.

She immediately changed from being weak and confused to someone of usefulness to the Lord and others.

The grace of God gives us purpose along with restoration.

We don’t have to wait to began serving!  We just need to “wait on” (seek) His instruction.

My Jesus can be your Jesus too! Please tell Father God that you have decided to place your faith in Jesus, The Son of God. Tell Him that you have been a sinner and now you are sorry for your sins. Confess that you need the sacrifice for sin that Jesus made for you on the cross, and believe that your sins have been forgiven because of the blood and the sacrificial death of Jesus! Ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit so that you can live a new life that pleases and glorifies Him. If you prayed this prayer to God, He heard you and you are now His own dear child. Jesus has gone into Heaven to make a place for you and Jesus has covered you with His own perfect righteousness! You have now made total peace with God according to His new Covenant. Read the Bible and keep praying to Jesus, and The Father, for everything great and small, and be thankful. Also, find a place to worship God with other believers, remembering that they are sinners saved by grace just like you. ***All Bible quotations are from the New King James Version translated from the ancient manuscripts.
